"I've learned how important it is for us all, whenever possible, to create and maintain calming rituals despite all."
Give me a little insight to where you are in your life right now with career, goals, dreams.
I have my hand in a number of things right now – I’m a curatorial assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, where I help organize exhibitions. I also have a handful of seemingly unrelated passion projects: I have been knitting for over a decade and weaving for about five years, and for the last year or so, I have been deeply studying Tarot and have been reading for others for the last six months. At the moment, I am most thrilled about my Tarot practice – I love offering people clarity and guidance through the magic and ceremony of Tarot readings.
Also, I’m getting married in September so a lot of my dreaming recently has been focused on wedding planning and our post-wedding trip to Iceland, but also my hopes for the life my fiance and I are building together.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
How do you live a sustainable life?
I think about sustainability a lot, and for me it’s a goal that I am constantly working toward rather than something I’ve arrived at. I try to be mindful about what I purchase -- places like the Shudio, which sell amazing vintage clothes, make it easy to consume in a way that doesn't negatively impact the environment.
Something you've learned in the past year?
Wow, I've learned so much in the last year, but something that immediately comes to mind is learning how important self-care is during busy times personally and also during difficult social and political moments. More specifically, I think I've learned how important it is for us all, whenever possible, to create and maintain calming rituals despite all.
Why Chicago to live and work?
I moved to Chicago six years ago for school, and have grown to love living here, especially during the summer. So many great restaurants, great people, great art and architecture. I initially thought I would move back to New York as soon as I could, but interesting work opportunities, friends, and love have kept me here, and Chicago just feels like home right now.
Piece of clothing that has made you feel your best?
I have a simple black silk dress that I've been feeling really great in this summer. I love garments that feel great against the skin, but also look polished without being over-wrought.
What does personal style mean to you. Do you have any style icons?
To me, personal style actually relates to the piece of advice I mentioned earlier-- trusting oneself and trusting in what feels good, rather than following trends. As for style icons, some contemporary names that come to mind are Solange Knowles and Zoe Kravitz -- I don't try to dress like either of them, but appreciate them for being beautiful women doing their own thing!
What makes you proud to be a woman?
I think more than proud, I feel grateful that I'm comfortable with my gender identity and that, for the most part, my community values women and feminist politics. I am very aware of what a privilege that is, even though it should be the norm, and hopefully will be someday.
Feel free to share anything else about yourself.
I'll be offering tarot readings at Pitchfork Music Festival, July 15-17! If any one is going to be there and are feeling called, they should come find me for a reading!
Thank you, Grace, for taking the time to share your thoughts with us !
